The IRCCS Policlinico di Sant’Orsola – UniboMagazine is born

551 researchers including doctors, biologists, technicians and personnel of the health professions. 502 active clinical trials with 22,500 patients enrolled (2019 data): the new IRCCS Policlinico di Sant’Orsola di Bologna starts from here. Two areas for which recognition was obtained: assistance and research in transplants and in critically ill patients and integrated medical and surgical management of oncological pathologies.

Thus, the scientific hospitalization and treatment institutes in Emilia-Romagna rise to five.

The recognition concludes the path started at the end of 2018 by the Region together with the two health authorities, the Municipality and the University, and was obtained for two research areas, with respect to which Bologna already represents a point of reference at national level and beyond : assistance and research in transplants and in critically ill patients and integrated medical and surgical management of oncological pathologies.

For the health of Emilia-Romagna the ability to integrate assistance and research is confirmed and to allow access to new, substantial funding. For patients with very complex pathologies who are already being treated in these hospitals from all over Italy and beyond, it means being able to rely on experimental protocols and receive the most innovative treatments. For professionals, to further develop the research activity also by joining international networks.

They intervened at the ceremony Giuliano Barigazzi, President of the Territorial Social and Health Conference of Bologna, Paolo Bordon, General Manager of the USL of Bologna, Raffaele Donini, Councilor for Health Policies of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Chiara Gibertoni, General Director of the S. Orsola Polyclinic, Maria Novella Luciani, Directorate General for Research and Innovation in Health – Ministry of Health, Francesco Ubertini, Magnificent Rector of the University of Bologna.

The recognition confirms that Bologna and Emilia-Romagna represent, starting from the areas for which the IRCCS was obtained, a clinical-assistance and research point of reference at national level and beyond. Inside the Sant’Orsola Polyclinic there are numerous functions and highly complex centers of reference relating to these areas, in particular: organ transplantation (heart, lung, isolated intestine, multivisceral, pediatric and adult kidney liver) and adult and pediatric marrow; adult and pediatric cardiac surgery; Ecmo center (ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation); regional referral center for benign chronic intestinal failure; regional reference center for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic intestinal diseases; regional reference center for the treatment of ovarian cancer; single regional center for CAR-T therapies; pediatric nephrology for the management of patients with chronic renal failure; immunogenetics and molecular genetics.

The University Hospital of Bologna is also recognized as a participating unit in 5 Ern networks (European Reference Network), relating to rare solid tumors in adults, respiratory diseases, endocrine conditions, skin diseases and rare congenital malformations and intellectual disabilities.

With this new entry, the IRCCS of Emilia-Romagna rise to five (four public and one private), which confirms itself as a center of excellence, within the national and international system, for clinical and experimental research, highly specialized assistance to patients and training: Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute (Ior) of Bologna, Institute of Neurological Sciences (Hospital Bellaria, within the Local Health Authority of Bologna), the Institute of Advanced Technologies and Care Models in Oncology (Local Health Authority of Reggio Emilia), and the Scientific Institute of Romagna for the study and treatment of tumors-IRST of Meldola (private).
