Moratti had doubts about Lukaku

Jakarta

Romelu Lukaku look good on the front lines Inter Milan. However, the former Inter President, Massimo Moratti, admitted that he had doubts about Lukaku.

Inter recruited Lukaku from Manchester United in the summer of 2019. For the sake of the Belgian striker, Nerazzurri broke the club transfer record by spending 74 million euros.

Lukaku answered Inter’s confidence with a goal. The striker who was born in 1993 has contributed 31 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions this season.

Lukaku still has the opportunity to add to his tally of goals as Inter move to the Europa League semifinals. Finally, he scored one goal in Inter’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter-finals.

Moratti was worried that Lukaku would not be able to cover the departure of Mauro Icardi who was released to Paris Saint-Germain. However, Lukaku provided evidence that Antonio Conte was not mistaken in recruiting him.

“I was wrong about Lukaku,” Moratti was quoted as saying in the Qutidiano Sportivo newspaper Football Italia.

“To be honest, I thought he was just physically strong and we were afraid we would regret losing Icardi.”

“In fact, Romelu is a champion, always helps his team mates and has a good vision of playing. Antonio Conte has really demanded his signing and then did a good job honing it,” he said.

Moratti also spoke about his hopes for Inter in the Europa League. He hopes Inter can be champions.

“Winning the Europa League will not be easy, because there are four very competitive teams left, but I really hope Inter can be the next Italian club to lift the European trophy,” said Moratti.

Inter will face Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals of the Europa League on Tuesday (18/8/2020) early morning hrs.
