The well-known expression “And now for something completely different“from the British series Monty Python was awarded a seat in the Dikke Van Dale. The quote is often used in Dutch texts.
Editor-in-Chief Ton den Boon reported on the amazing addition to the Van Dale on the radio show follow the place. “The quote has become synonymous with a very rapid, almost absurd transition.”
“You talk about something and then you move on to a completely different topic and you use this phrase to make that transition clear.” The quote has established itself in the Dutch language.
It is not uncommon for British words or phrases to end up in the Van Dale when adopted in the Dutch language. “This goes for words, think of the Internet, as much as it does for statements,” Den Boon clarifies. Previously the world famous quote “Don’t talk about the war“from the John Cleese series Fawlty Towers included in the Van Dale.
The British program, which is officially The flying circus of Monty Python has been shown on the BBC for four seasons since 1969. The show was created by six comedians: Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. After the TV series, four more films followed, various live shows and several albums.
