Montpellier: abandoned puppies in search of a new refuge

Intrepid, Kawa, Kima, Kaïvo, lead a life of young, very playful puppies in the ground floor T3 of Pascale Weiss, in Grabels, on the heights of Montpellier (Hérault). They are about 8 weeks old. They scramble to get the caresses of the founder of the association Le Jardin des Patates, created in 2018, and Chantal, her mother. These two little females and this young male are survivors.

“It was the dog of a young walker who spotted them near Puissalicon. They were in the river, more precisely in a plastic bag weighted with stones. They were 7 border collie-Australian Shepherd cross puppies. All of them survived. The other 4 joined a second association, ”says Pascale Weiss, 37, who lives on her disabled adult allowance to devote herself fully to the rescue and education of young abandoned dogs.

A garage sale to supplement the finances of the association

“These are always life-threatening puppies that we collect, sometimes in garbage bags,” adds Cécile Rust, one of the most active volunteers among the hundred or so volunteers involved in this mission. To be operational every hour, Pascale Weiss has transformed her own apartment into a real refuge for puppies. “The care to be given to young dogs is every day and practically 24 hours a day. Small, they bottle feed every two hours and their bladder does not allow them to hold back for long. And like the babies of humans, they can’t stand being abandoned for hours, ”adds Chantal, Pascale’s mother, who takes over when the different activities collide.

“We educate and socialize these puppies,” adds the founder of the association Le Jardin des Patates. We take them out every day for long walks and we give them the dog codes. And only then do we offer them for adoption. “First in a foster family for a probationary period of two months then definitively, after having been vaccinated and sterilized, for 330 € to cover the veterinary costs and the care provided.

Pascale Weiss is uncompromising on the criteria for choosing adopters: “Be careful, we do not adopt a puppy but a dog in the making who, one day will be an adult. And if you have to be away from home for ten hours to go to work, you have to forget right away, the puppy will not stand it, ”explains the 30-something, in full preparation for the Frip’Patates operation, this week -end, a garage sale to supplement the finances of the association (Mairie de quartier de la Valsière in Grabels, this Sunday until 6 p.m. and Monday until 1 p.m.).

Because the association operates essentially on own funds: donations, charity sales. Above all, she must find a new arch because the lease on Grabels’ apartment ends in 2022 and will not be renewed. It is therefore necessary to find if possible a small house with a garden, in the vicinity of Montpellier, so that the association – solvent and which will pay the rent – can continue to collect abandoned puppies throughout Languedoc (87 in two years). And it is an urgent appeal that today Pascale la sauveuse launches.
