Two new official cases of Monkeypox virus infection were confirmed in France on Tuesday, May 24, including one identified in Occitania.

The results of the Monkeypox epidemic (monkey pox, editor’s note) now stands at 5 cases in France, according to a latest press release from Public Health France. Two new cases have been identified in Occitania and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

“To date, in Europe, these cases have occurred mainly, but not exclusively, in men who have sex with men, without a direct link to people returning from an endemic area”, detail in a press release the French health authorities.

As of May 25, 2022, 5 confirmed cases of Monkeypox have been reported in France: 3 in Ile-de-France, 1 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and 1 in Occitanie.

“Contamination en Europe”

“In the usual absence of Monkeypox in Europe and of a link reported by the cases identified with a risk area, the current European context constitutes an alert and suggests contamination in Europe”, note the experts.

In recent days, the presence of this rare virus, endemic in certain regions of Africa, has been reported in several European countries, including Great Britain, France or Spain, as well as in the United States. Medical authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), believe that the risk of this disease spreading widely is reduced.
