Monkey pox: 94 new cases of Monkeypox virus in France, including a first woman

Public Health announced on Tuesday that 277 cases of monkeypox have been detected in the country.

As of June 21, 2022, 277 cas confirmed monkeypox were reported in France, i.e. 94 more in five days indicates Public Health France:

  • 195 in Ile-de-France,
  • 16 in Occitania,
  • 14 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes,
  • 16 in New Aquitaine,
  • 12 in Hauts-de-France,
  • 12 in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur,
  • 6 in Normandy,
  • 1 in Centre-Loire Valley,
  • 1 in Burgundy-Franche-Comté,
  • 1 in Great East
  • 3 in Brittany.

Occitania is thus the second most affected region of France, with three more cases since last Thursday.

Among these cases, a first female case has been confirmed, the mode of transmission of which is under investigation, and all the others are men.

Of the 248 cases confirmed as of June 20, 2022, 243 have been investigated, one remains unreachable and 4 are under investigation.

Median age: 34 years old

All confirmed cases as of June 20 are male, aged between 19 and 71 (median age: 34).

The dates of onset of symptoms extend between 7 myi and June 15 2022 . The cas have been diagnosed in median 7 days (between 0 to 22 days) after symptoms start.

Parmi les cas investigated, 78% presented a genito-anal rash, 75% an eruption on another part of the body, 70% fever and 69% lymphadenopathy. Eleven of them are also immunocompromised.

No deaths are to be deplored.

To date, as in other European countries, these cases have occurred mainly, but not exclusively, in men who have sex with men (MSM), with no direct link to people returning from endemic areas. The majority of cases report multiple sexual partners.

Most of the cases investigated declare that they cannot identify the person who allegedly infected them. Finally, 38 of these cases are secondary cases.

Among the cases investigated, 67 traveled, stayed or worked abroad before the onset of their symptoms, some of them in several different countries:

  • 35 trips are thus reported in Spain,
  • 8 in Belgium,
  • 6 in Germany,
  • 4 in the UK,
  • 4 in Switzerland,
  • 3 au Portugal,
  • 2 in the Netherlands,
  • 2 in Denmark,
  • 2 in Mali,
  • 2 in Greece,
  • 1 in Luxembourg,
  • 1 and Inde,
  • 1 in the United States,
  • 1 in Colombia,
  • 1 in Morocco,
  • 1 in Cyprus
  • 1 in Serbia.

These trips do not systematically constitute the origin of the contamination, and the list of countries cited may change as the data is consolidated.
