MLS: Paredes scores and Timbers draw 1-1 with Orlando City | sports

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Paraguayan Cristhian Paredes scored from a penalty in the 80th minute as the Portland Timbers tied Orlando City 1-1 on Sunday in a game in which local fans saved 5 minutes of silence in relation to the dismissal of the Peruvian player Andy Polo.

Brazilian Junior Urso of Orlando City (2-2-1) opened the scoring in the 52nd minute in the first meeting between the two clubs since August 2020, when they met in the final of the MLS is Back tournament. The Timbers won in the bubble 2-1.

Mexican Josecarlos Van Rankin of the Timbers was sent off in the 76th minute, leaving the team with 10 men for the rest of the game.

Orlando City has two wins, two draws and one loss while Portland has one win, three draws and one loss.

Last weekend, the Timbers lost 4-1 at FC Dallas, whose Colombian-American player Jesús Ferreira scored three goals against them in 10 minutes.

Orlando City beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 last Saturday.

Eryk Williamson came off the bench in the 82nd minute and was playing his first game for the Timbers since he tore his ACL last August during a game against the Sounders.

Portland fans grouped in the Timbers Army stood silent for five minutes at the start of the game in protest at the team’s handling of partner abuse allegations against Andy Polo.

The Timbers fired Polo last month after his estranged wife accused him of mistreatment on Peruvian television.

The club had renewed Polo’s contract in December even after a visit by the sheriff’s department to his home last May.

Polo was served with a citation without being charged for the incident and has denied the charges against him.
