Mites & Bad Habits: The Cause of Eye Scars and Inflammation

Eye scars and eye-picking may be caused by mites. Doctors listed 5 bad habits that cause repeated inflammation.

Frequent eye marks, raw eyes and needles may be caused by mites. “TOPick Consultation Room” invited Liang Yulong, an honorary consultant ophthalmologist of Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, to dismantle the problem of eye mites and share tips on preventing eye inflammation.

Hair follicle mites exacerbate inflammation

Dr. Liang pointed out that mites are a kind of microorganisms that live in symbiosis with humans. Among them, there is a type of hair follicle mite that sucks the oil secreted by hair follicles. If there is too much oil on the skin, it will lead to the growth of bacteria, and then inflammation, forming acne. If the situation occurs on the eyelids, it will cause eye sores commonly known as “eye pricks”. The hair follicle mites will aggravate the appearance of inflammation, leading to the deterioration of eye pinching, especially redness and swelling, and continuous recurrence.

Dr. Leung said that, generally speaking, most hair follicle mites do not affect health and live in symbiosis with humans. Therefore, many patients do not discover the presence of mites until they have a good eye. If eye sores appear repeatedly, itchy eyes, and persist for a long time, it is recommended to seek help from an ophthalmologist. If necessary, a few eyelashes will be picked up for testing.

Tea tree oil treatment effectively drives away mites

If mites are found after the test, you should consider deworming. Dr. Liang pointed out that the most effective way to get rid of mites is tea tree oil treatment. Patients can use eye pads containing tea tree oil to clean the eyelids. The treatment usually takes several weeks to a month.

If the mites are stubborn, it is necessary to use 100% pure tea tree oil. The doctor will apply tea tree oil on the eyelids of the patient. After a certain period of treatment, the mites can be effectively driven away.

5 Habits That Cause Repeated Eye Inflammation

Dr. Liang said that in order to reduce the occurrence of eye inflammation, it is necessary to improve 5 bad habits in daily life:

  • Rubbing your eyes often can cause bacteria to grow in your eyes
  • Wearing contact lenses for a long time will reduce the oxygen content of the eye surface, which is easy to breed bacteria
  • If makeup is not removed thoroughly, cosmetics may accumulate at the ends of eyelash hair follicles, which may block hair follicles and aggravate inflammation
  • Stress and often staying up late will also increase the secretion of hair follicles
  • Frequent consumption of spicy and greasy food may increase the secretion of hair follicles, which in turn increases the chance of eye pinching

Dr. Liang reminded that keeping the eyes clean can effectively prevent inflammation. You might as well use artificial tears after removing makeup to wash away the remaining cosmetic chemicals and particles on the eye surface. If you suffer from eye sores unfortunately, you should avoid wearing contact lenses and wear regular glasses instead. You should also stop eating, relieve stress, and maintain adequate sleep, all of which will help speed up the recovery of the disease.
