Mircea Lucescu on Developing Players at Shakhtar, Highlighting Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s Career

Former Shakhtar head coach Mircea Lucescu, with his characteristic modesty, spoke about his contribution to the development of the players of the Donetsk team, in particular, focusing on Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

– You worked in Ukraine for 15 years: 12 at Shakhtar and 3 years at Dynamo: can you say this is your second home?

– There is only one homeland and for me it is Romania. But I lived most of my career in Ukraine. I took unknown 16-17 year old players who then became the main characters of the top European leagues. Please note that over the years, Brazil regularly called up Fernandinho, Willian, Douglas Costa, Marlos, Fred to the national team (although Marlos played for the Ukrainian national team, and Ukrainian clubs do not have the right to sign foreigners who have not reached the age of 18 – approx.) .

– What about Mkhitaryan, who at almost 35 years old still plays an important role at Inter?

– My student. We all know this player, but above all, he is a great person. Football intellectual, speaks 5 languages, very smart. He played a vital role in Shakhtar: he ran 12 kilometers per game, he is not only fast on the field, but also thinks very quickly, makes decisions, he scored a lot of goals while playing in my midfield. His career doesn’t surprise me.

– He played for Borussia, Manchester United, Arsenal, Roma, Inter…

– Really great teams. I asked the president of Shakhtar to pick it up cheaply from Metalurh Donetsk, a small Ukrainian team, and he sold it for a lot of money. I immediately saw his qualities.
