“Miracles of Democracy” – Local artists in the center of the Sculpture Quadrennial this year / Article / LSM.lv

On September 5, the 13th Sculpture Quadrennial will start in Riga, which since 1972 has been a platform for the expression of both Latvian and foreign artists and the recognition of new talents. This year, taking into account the difficulties and challenges posed by Covid-19, the organizers of the festival want to pay special attention to local artists, choosing the words “Miracles of Democracy” as the guiding motto.

The Latvian Radio program “Kultūras Rondo” met with three of the authors of the 16th Quadrennial in their workshops.

The sculptor Miķelis Mūrnieks is inspired by the 1988 project for the Riga metro, namely the station “Aurora”, which on this line was intended as one of the stations on the route “Zasulauks – factory VEF”. The bricklayer and his assistant in his workshop in Bišumuiža are preparing a 1: 1 reply of this metro station, taking the available architectural and design plans as an example.

The entrance to the non-existent metro station from Saturday will be located between Āgenskalns Market and Eduards Smiļģis Museum. In the context of democracy, Mūrnieki was attracted by this topic because at one time extensive protests were organized against the construction of the metro.

Donāts Mockus is a Lithuanian sculptor who studied at the Kaunas branch of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, but has been living and working in Riga for seven years. In Mockus’ workshop, as he laughs, “snow has started to snow” – a monumental foam man is cut and glued here, who in some ways resembles a centipede, only has his hands instead of his feet. The title of the work is “Homo Democraticus”.

The location of the work will be on the pedestal of the former railway bridge in the Daugava, which is located next to the current railway bridge.

The young artist Ance Vilnīte is just starting her career in the Sculpture Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts, but her determination is superior to the modesty of the first inhabitant. As can be seen in the Vilnīte workshop in the Tallinn quarter, she has also chosen to work with foam equipment, and the representation is no less complicated than Donatas’ “Democratic Man”.

Ance Vilnīte’s comment on the powerhouse complexes will be seen right where it was made – in the creative quarter of Tallinas Street.

In turn, the locations of other objects can be found both on the social network “Facebook”And the Sculpture Quadrennial Homepage.

The opening of the festival on Saturday, September 5, will be marked with mask move in cooperation with the theater association “Kvadrifrons”. The procession will start at 19.00 from the courtyard of Tallinn quarter, then the route will lead through the center of Riga to Āgenskalns market, revealing several works of art of the quadrennial along the way.
