Ministry of Foreign Affairs Opens Voice About Israel Appearing in Indonesia’s 2023 U-20 World Cup

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) opens its voice about Israel which will appear in the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.

Teuku Faizasyah, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that PSSI is the authorized party to answer the question of the Israeli national team entering Indonesia due to the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“Please ask PSSI which is hosting the World Cup,” said Faizasyah to CNNIndonesia.com.

However, Faizasyah stated that the presence of athletes from countries that do not have diplomatic relations with Indonesia, such as Israel, is possible.

“For international events and Indonesia is limited to being the host (for example the recent IPU meeting), participation is possible because the invitations come from third parties/international bodies. For world football events, the inviter is FIFA,” said Faizasyah.

Previously, PSSI Chairman Mochamad Iriawan had stated that there was no problem with Israel’s presence at the 2023 U-20 World Cup. Iriawan said this before Israel made sure to qualify for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

“As for Israel, I think there is an agreement signed [kesepakatan] government time last year. Anyone who comes can,” said Iriawan when met during the U-19 Indonesia National Team practice, Thursday (23/6).

“This is football, so there is no problem. We will still accommodate Israel. That was our last meeting with the government last year regarding Israel,” said Iriawan last week.

Israel has confirmed itself to qualify for the 2023 U-20 World Cup after successfully advancing to the semifinals of the 2022 U-19 European Cup. The 2022 U-19 European Cup itself is also a qualifying event for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

Israel advanced to the semifinals with the status of runner-up group under England. Apart from Israel and England, other European teams that have confirmed qualification for the 2023 U-20 World Cup are France and Italy.
