Ministry of Education’s Response to Temporary School Closures: Only 0.3% Affected due to Hardline Policy

Ministry of Education “Request withdrawal from school”
It seems that the rate was only 0.3% due to the hardline response policy

A total of 17 schools across the country decided to temporarily close their schools at their own discretion to participate in the ‘Public Education Cessation Day’ on the 4th of next month, the 49th death of a teacher at Seoi Elementary School in Seocho-gu, Seoul.

On the 29th, the Ministry of Education confirmed schools that had decided to close temporarily through 17 provincial and provincial offices of education, and as a result, 17 elementary schools across the country decided to close at their discretion. This is 0.3% of the 6,200 elementary schools nationwide. Middle and high schools, special schools, and various schools have not participated so far.

The Ministry of Education said, “We plan to make sure that no schools are temporarily closed by officially requesting the withdrawal from schools that have decided to close temporarily.”

According to the education community, the Ministry of Education sent official letters to 17 provincial and provincial offices of education across the country, asking them to find out the status of schools temporarily closed on the 4th of next month. The Ministry of Education said in an official document that the Office of Education should collect the list of individual schools and the general status of each school level, including elementary, middle and high schools, on a daily basis, and submit the final list of temporarily closed schools by the 5th of next month in an official document.

Earlier, in an online community survey of elementary school teachers, more than 400 schools were expected to temporarily close. Recently, some schools have reversed their temporary closures or stopped collecting opinions. It is interpreted that the Ministry of Education felt burdened when it announced a strict response policy to collective actions such as the use of annual leave by teachers and temporary closures.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho said at a meeting with provincial and provincial education superintendents that day, “According to the law, the designation of temporary holidays during the school year for collective action by teachers and the use of annual leave and sick leave by teachers is clearly against the law.” On the other hand, some superintendents of education in Seoul and Jeonbuk expressed their support for teachers’ collective action movement on the ‘Day to Stop Public Education’.
