Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md criticized Reverend Saifuddin Ibrahim in a YouTube show entitled ‘The Response of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs regarding Pastor Saifuddin Ibrahim.’ There have also been criticisms from the Ministry of Religion, including Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, who denies Saifuddin Ibrahim.
This was conveyed by the Acting Head of the Public Relations, Data and Information Bureau, Thobib Al Asyhar. Thobib said Yaqut denies that the pesantren is called giving birth to radicals.
“It is inappropriate for Pastor Saifuddin to claim that pesantren gave birth to radicals. He forgot that Gus Minister was born from a pesantren environment and his family also owns an Islamic boarding school. Of course the Minister of Religion does not agree with Pastor Saifuddin’s statement,” Thobib said in his statement, Wednesday (16/3/2022). .
Tobib regrets statement Saifuddin Ibrahim. He also assessed that Saifuddin Ibrahim could disrupt inter-community harmony.
“I see that what Pastor Saifuddin is doing can actually disrupt inter-faith harmony and efforts to strengthen religious moderation,” he said.
Yaqut, continued Thobib, often invites religious leaders not to express opinions that are not their competence. He said religious leaders, including Saifuddin Ibrahim, must prioritize knitting harmony.
“Gus Minister has been inviting religious leaders to maintain harmony,” he said.
He also said Yaqut did not know Saifuddin Ibrahim. He said that so far there has never been an official meeting between Minister of Religion Yaqut and Saifuddin Ibrahim.
“Gus Minister (Yaqut) is not familiar with Reverend Saifuddin Ibrahim. Gus Minister has never heard what Pastor Saifuddin claimed was repeatedly told to the Minister of Religion,” he stressed.
Respons Mahfud Md
Mahfud said that there is Law (Law) Number 1 of 1965 which regulates the Prevention of Abuse and/or Defamation of Religion has been updated to Law No. 5 of 1969. He said the law can be used as a basis to process Saifuddin. He said, in the basic teachings of Islam, in the Qur’an there are 6,666 verses, nothing should be reduced.
