Millions in damage from scammers posing as bank employees

Scammers have stolen millions in recent months by pretending to be bank employees, unveiled the TV program Kassa Saturday. The fraudsters used ‘spoofing’ to give their victims the impression that they were being called by the bank.

Thanks to this technique, it is possible to have the helpdesk number of banks appear on the screen of the recipient. This way the scammers can convince people that they have a bank employee on the line. The victims were then persuaded to transfer money to another bank account.

With the story that strange transactions were traced on the victim’s account and that the customer had to temporarily transfer his or her savings to a safe ‘vault account’, criminals could steal millions of euros. The victims thought they were transferring their money to a safe account opened for them, in reality they transferred all their savings to the account of a ‘cat catcher’.

Only Rabobank will compensate the damage thus incurred. ING and ABN Amro let customers pay for the loss.
