Microsoft wants to resurrect loved ones from digital memories in the form of chatbots

Latest Microsoft project it has nothing to do with any version of Windows, but with the resurrection of the dead. Okay, that’s a lot to say “resurrection”, but rather a recollection of them through a chatbot with AI. The concept sounds SF, but I’ve heard it in the past and seen it in action in series like “Black Mirror”.

A patent recently received by Microsoft alludes to the “resurrection of a deceased person in the form of a chat bot.” The more data and details there are about that person online, the more accurate their chatbot will be. The special software created with AI will gather images, voice data, social media posts and electronic messages to recreate a digital ego after death. Multidimensional 2D and 3D models of those who are no longer with us are also prepared. The communication between the surviving loved ones and the new bot will be done vocally and through text messages.

It is interesting that we will be able to choose iterations of that person, versions from the age of 10, 20, 40 or 60 years or derivatives of it. It can be a friend, a relative, an acquaintance or even a celebrity or historical figure. Even fictional characters can be created in this way, taking their cues from movies or books. AI and chatbot training can be done by the user, together with the Microsoft team. Another theory is that you can train and prepare your digital clone for the moment when you will no longer exist.

This practice is not new and celebrities have been using technology to bring back relatives or pets. Kanye West gave Kim Kardashian a hologram of her dead father in October 2020 as a birthday present. Barbra Streisand loved her dogs so much that she cloned them. The concept of rock concerts with celebrities who are no longer with us like Dio or Michael Jackson has been practiced for more than half a decade.

The problem is that Microsoft created another chatbot in 2016, one called Tay, which took messages from people via Twitter and quickly became racist and abusive. What do we do if the dark side of the deceased is rendered by those bots?
