“Mexico Approves Abdala Vaccine for Children 5 and Up with 92% Efficacy Against COVID-19”

Mexico City. The New Molecules Committee (CMN) of the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) issued a favorable opinion on the recombinant protein vaccine of the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, known as Abdala.

The vaccine, developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) of the Republic of Cuba, is indicated for specific active immunization against SARS-CoV-2 infection, in boys and girls from 5 years of age, with efficacy to mild, moderate and severe clinical forms of Covid-19 of 92.13 percent, 88.99 percent and 92.33 percent, respectively.

He indicated that the opinion issued by the CMN is part of the process to obtain emergency use authorization issued by the Cofepris Sanitary Authorization Commission, once the information presented has been evaluated.

In a statement, he added that on April 3, the Abdala vaccine obtained a recommendation from the National Committee for Science, Technology and Innovation in Public Health (CNCTI-SP), now the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conahcyt). favorable for the extension of the indication for emergency use of the Abdala vaccine against Covid-19 for primary vaccination in the pediatric population from 5 to 17 years of age.

Since 2021, the Center for the State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed) of Cuba authorized the emergency use of said vaccine in that country, confirming that it met the requirements and parameters in terms of quality, safety and efficacy. .
