“I’m thinking of going to Los Angeles for a vaccine that allows me to enter the United States,” confessed José González, a teacher who lives in the Mexican border city Tijuana.
González, a Mexican national, said he was first vaccinated with CanSino just because he had no other option.
“Now I regret it,” he added before explaining that his job requires him to frequently cross into the United States.
More than 15 mexicans told Reuters they were looking to get vaccinated again, not with booster shots, but to comply with the new rule, which requires those who want to cross the border into the United States to show proof of their vaccine.
The rule marks the last hurdle faced by residents of the Mexican border, many of whom for years have crossed for work or classes, including families with mixed immigration status or even dual citizenship.
“We have been through very difficult situations with the pandemic, such as not being able to cross the border in urgent cases such as when a close relative dies and now we also have to deal with this,” said Gabriela Preciado, a Tijuana resident and teacher who also received the vaccine from CanSino because it was the only one available at that time.
Others have already taken especially long trips to comply with the new rule.
“I went to Mexico City and from there I took a flight to Los Angeles,” said another Tijuana educator, who refused to give his name for fear of problems with border agents.
The Mexican capital is located about 2,700 kilometers south of Tijuana.
“It’s not that I have a lot of money to travel (…) but I had to do it because part of my job requires me to cross,” he added.
State health officials Baja Californiaa, home to Tijuana, they said there are currently no plans to offer the WHO-approved vaccines for those who cross regularly.
The Mexican government plans to inoculate 37% of its 126 million inhabitants with doses of CanSino and Sputnik V.
While coronavirus infection rates have declined recently, Mexico remains one of the nations most affected by the pandemic worldwide, with a cumulative of more than 3.8 million cases and at least 289,000 deaths, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
