Métropole de Lyon: 85 km of temporary cycle paths at the start of the new school year

To support and encourage the change of habits in travel, temporary cycle paths are being developed in the Lyon metropolitan area. 77 km had been announced just before May 11 … there will be more.

You may have spotted them with their yellow color. These temporary cycle paths sometimes share bus lanes or reduce traffic lanes.

The first 30 km mainly concern the municipalities of Lyon, Villeurbanne, Tassin-la-Demi-Lune, Bron, Vaulx-en-Velin and Caluire-et-Cuire and Marcy l’Etoile.

The next 30 km will be deployed on Champagne-au -Mont-d’Or, Limonest, Sainte-Foy les Lyon, Chassieu and Saint-Priest. As well as most of the municipalities in Saône valley with the development of the right bank of the river.

But since May 11, other municipalities have joined the concertation and are asking for facilities for cyclists. In total, these are therefore close to 85 km of temporary cycle paths which will be set up in the Lyon conurbation at the start of the September academic year.

We were expecting a postponement of the modes of movement towards the bicycle at the end of the confinement, which is confirmed. Last week, the services of the Metropolis recorded bike traffic at 140% of normal. So 300,000 bikes / day were counted Tuesday against 200,000 usually.

Go back if necessary

These cycle paths, but also the widening of certain sidewalks, are developments that are part of what is called tactical town planning. They are temporary and can be adapted according to use and needs.

These new cycling routes are therefore reversible. Some will also be modified because they lengthen the journey time, such as along rue Duquesne in the 6th arrondissement or avenue de la République in Tassin-la-Demi-Lune.

The axis that runs from Place Gabriel Peri (7th) to Place Bellecour (2nd) via the Pont de la Guillotière and Rue de la Barre is also under surveillance. The Metropolis indicates that it is working with cycling associations to consider improvements, even if it is still a bit early to have enough perspective.
