Meth smuggler escapes death row through sewer | Abroad

It was during a changing of the guard that Changpan chose his moment, Reuters news agency reports. In the prison of Tangerang, a supporter of the Jakarta metropolis, he worked for at least six months preparing for his escape, according to his cellmate.

During a renovation project in the kitchen of the prison, which the drug criminal worked on, Changpan succeeded in smuggling tools into his cell, according to authorities. From there he managed to break through a wall and floor to reach the sewer. It is not clear how and where the criminal subsequently managed to return to daylight. Whether the smuggler had help from within is being investigated.

Police say Cai has escaped before. In 2017, for example, he saw an opportunity to run away through a hole in the bathroom of a police detention center. Changpan has since been placed on the list of most wanted figures in Indonesia.
