Meter-high star on the Sagrada Familia was lit up for the first time tonight

The star is 7.5 meters wide, weighs about 5.5 tons and is made of steel and glass. The Star of Bethlehem has 12 points of 2.9 meters in length.

1.5 million euros

The star was already placed on the Holy Mary’s Tower last week, but tonight the star was only lit for the first time. During the day it will collect and reflect the sunlight. In the evening, the star, which has cost 1.5 million euros, is illuminated from the inside.

Cardinal and Archbishop of Barcelona Joan Josep Omella has blessed the Star of Bethlehem. Omella said the star will change Barcelona’s skyline forever and help “end the great darkness of the pandemic.”

The construction of the Sagrada Familia started in 1883, to the design of Gaudi. Work continued after the Catalan architect’s death in 1926. According to Cardinal Omella, Gaudi attended the ceremony ‘deeply moved from heaven’.

2030 at the earliest

After all these years, the basilica is still not finished. According to the latest estimates, the world-famous structure will be finished in 2030 at the earliest.
