Meteorologists in Brazil announced Monday that weather conditions may push locust swarms from northern Argentina to cross the border and enter Brazil, threatening the winter crops in this giant agricultural country.

Celso Oliveira, an expert in the Brazilian meteorological agency (Sumar) in Sao Paulo, said in a message to him that wind currents next Wednesday may contribute to the transport of these insects insatiable into Brazil.

Oliveira said that the locust swarms are now about 100 km (62 miles) from the Rio Grande do Sul state border.

The meteorologist said that these swarms will harm the crops of wheat, canola, and barley, as well as other local plants in the western part of the state.

In late June, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture declared a state of emergency in two southern states to allow officials to take the necessary precautions.
