Meta paid almost 25 million euros last year for Mark Zuckerberg’s security

The security of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg cost 26.8 million dollars (24.7 million euros) in 2021.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, paid $15.2 million last year to protect CEO Mark Zuckerberg at home and while traveling. In addition, he was awarded $10 million (9.2 million euros) as a “before tax” allowance to keep his family safe and $1.6 million for the use of a personal plane.

In total, it is $26.8 million, or 6 percent more than in 2020. Meta attributes the increase to personal travel, protocols related to Covid-19 and price increases for security personnel.

The costs to protect Mark Zuckerberg are therefore many times greater than the amounts spent by similar technology companies. For example, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos security cost ‘only’ $1.6 million in 2021.

It is important to know that the security budget is actually partly the salary of the CEO, because Zuckerberg pays himself an annual salary of only 1 dollar. And he doesn’t get bonuses.

Meta doesn’t just pay for Zuckerberg’s security. Other top officials at the company are also surrounded by security agents. In 2021, for example, nearly $9 million was spent on the security of COO Sheryl Sandberg, with an additional $2.3 million for the use of a private jet.
