“Mermaidcore: The Summer Aesthetic Taking the Fashion World by Storm”

We know that fashion trends follow each other without ever looking alike, but we must recognize that “mermaidcore” is already establishing itself as the flagship aesthetic of the summer. In question ? The release of the long-awaited feature film “The Little Mermaid”, scheduled for May 24, which cultivates a certain interest in this aquatic aesthetic. From catwalks to social networks to red carpets: seashells and fishing nets are already unanimous!

Dress like a mermaid. The idea may seem absurd, and yet… The fashion industry is currently devoting a real cult to this aquatic inspiration straight from the tale of Hans Christian Andersen. But it was her live-action adaptation, worn by American actress Halle Bailey, which sparked unprecedented enthusiasm a few months ago for the most emblematic outfits of the Little Mermaid, princess of the seabed of the Disney studios. At stake ? Seashells galore, whether they come in belts, jewelry, or shoes, but also fishing nets, iridescent shades, mermaid dresses, and wet look beauty. The full panoply of heroin!

Almost 200 million views

Do not panic, the “mermaidcore” does not require strolling in the metro with a fishtail as a skirt or pants, but to multiply the aquatic references. As we have seen, seashells – in jewellery, in patterns or embroidered – are the real stars of this fashionable aesthetic, and are used on clothing, necklaces, anklets and other accessories. The famous fishing net material has also made a comeback on the catwalks, as have sequins and sequins, while colors inspired by the ocean, including blue and iridescent shades, are omnipresent.

On social networks, and more particularly TikTok, the mermaidcore aesthetic is already being emulated around the world. The hashtag has already generated nearly 200 million views, taking into account its (very) many derivatives including #mermaidcoreaesthetic, #mermaidcorefashion, #mermaidcorejewelry, #mermaidcorestyle, or #mermaidcoretrend, to name a few. More than just a trend, it’s a real phenomenon that has already conquered luxury houses, designers, influencers, and the biggest celebrities who are embracing with style – and sometimes a lot of humor – this new essential inspiration. In full promotion of the film “The Mother”, Jennifer Lopez is one of the latest personalities to have adopted the “mermaidcore”, but she is far from being the only one.

Jennifer Lopez, Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian

If the trend has already persisted for several months, it is because it is acclaimed and promoted by a host of creators and public figures. The proof, as we have seen, with Jennifer Lopez, but also with Ludovic de Saint Sernin’s spring-summer 2023 show, directly inspired by the dressing room of the emblematic Disney character, sensual version, not to say ultra sexy. But that’s not all, we could also observe here and there a host of aquatic references on the catwalks, bras in the shape of shells – more kitsch, you die! – with iridescent hues and – of course – long mermaid dresses.

Dua Lipa seems to be unbeatable on the subject. Underwear, references to the marine world, sparkling make-up, and above all a fishing net… The young woman does not skimp on the means to pay homage – again and again – to the cult look of the Disney princess. A trend also tried and adopted – with more restraint – by Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Chiara Ferragni, or even Hailey Bieber. No wonder since the trend has invaded the catwalks, from David Koma to Blumarine via Versace, and even extends to the beauty industry.

The return of the wet look

Fashion is therefore not the only sector to have monopolized the mermaidcore trend. Jewelery has also drawn dedicated pieces, while make-up and hair artists seem to swear only by the wet look, this wet-effect beauty treatment, and iridescent eye shadows. But the strongest inspiration, star of the networks from the fall of 2022, is none other than la ‘laminated skin’a routine that results in moist skin, even dripping with sweat, like after a sports session – or after having made love – again translating this wet aspect that refers to the cult Disney character.
