Mercadona invests 39 million euros in the Canary Islands to accelerate the economic reactivation | Radio Club Tenerife

Mercadona, a company of physical supermarkets and online sales, accelerates its investment pace in the Canary Islands to help boost economic activity and counteract, with this effort, the economic and social consequences caused by the health crisis in this Autonomous Community. For all this, the company plans to allocate a total of 39 million euros in 2020, with which, in addition to further improving its efficiency and service, it will reactivate the local economy.

This investment will go to the opening of three new supermarkets, of which two are openings due to closures (new stores that replace the existing ones by not adapting to the standards that the company now requires); to the reform of another six to adapt them to the New Efficient Store Model and to be able to have a total of 53 supermarkets with this new model, characterized by improving the shopping experience of their “bosses” (customers); to the introduction of the new Ready to Eat section in 21 more new stores and to continue promoting the Frescos Global project, which incorporates important improvements in the fresh sections, achieving greater adaptation to the local assortment.

In addition, this investment drive will also have an indirect impact on job creation in the Canary Islands, since more than 150 technicians and operators of different trades will work on each of the reforms and openings that are carried out.

According to Paqui Planells, Territorial Director of External Relations in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands of Mercadona, “Since 1990, when the first of our stores in the Canary Islands were opened, we have not ceased to consolidate the commitment that the company maintains with the archipelago, where we already have 86 centers. This sustained growth over time is today more important than ever. Reactivating the economy of the areas where Mercadona is present in the Canary Islands, through actions, as reflected in the announced investment plan, is our responsibility as a company and a decisive test of the economic and social development of the Islands ”.

Mercadona in the Canary Islands

The company has 4,606 workers in the Canary Islands, all of them with stable and quality employment, and in the last 3 years it has invested 128.5 million euros, mainly destined to the growth and modernization of its network of stores.

Mercadona maintains a social commitment to residents of the areas where it is present and active. In the case of the Canary Islands, last year it donated 479 tons of food, equivalent to some 8,000 shopping carts, among a total of 11 charities and soup kitchens. This solidarity commitment has been reinforced in 2020 as a consequence of the situation derived from the health crisis, to which the company has responded with an increase in its donations of more than 118% compared to the same period, reaching 522 tons donated in the first semester of the year.
