What is the (bumps) plague?

Plague is an infectious infectious disease caused by a bacterium. The bacteria is transmitted by fleas. The plague can cause very painful bumps on the skin. The disease has historically led to massive deaths among the European population. The last cases of plague in the Netherlands were at the beginning of the 20th century.

There are three types of plague: bubonic plague, pneumonic plague and septic infections due to plague. The time from infection to the first symptoms depends on the type of plague and varies from a few days for pneumonic plague to about a week for bubonic plague and septic infections.

Bubonic plague starts with fever, headache and chills, followed by very painful bumps, especially in the groin area and armpits. Without treatment, the bacterium penetrates into the bloodstream in about half of the cases and causes sepsis (septicemia). Untreated sepsis is almost always fatal.

During the period 2000-2009, a total of 21,725 suspected plague cases were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). This number may be higher because in many countries insufficient data is collected on bullying cases.
