Memphis Depay feels morally obligated to take to the streets and demonstrate against racism. The Orange international stood on Dam Square in Amsterdam on Monday evening and was also present on Wednesday in protests in Rotterdam.
“I felt in my heart that I had to be there,” Memphis said on the talk show on Wednesday evening Beau on RTL 4. “I see what is happening in the Netherlands and the rest of the world. You see all kinds of colors rising up for us. It was my duty to stand there.”
The protests in the Netherlands are the result of the death of black American George Floyd, who was killed by police brutality in the city of Minneapolis last week. The demonstration on the Dam caused a lot of dust, because too many people stood together and they did not keep 1.5 meters away from each other.
Memphis nevertheless finds it justifiable that he took to the streets. “It is always said that I have an exemplary role, but I also have a feeling. I have had to deal with enough painful things in my life. All in all I saw a good reason to be there.”
“Certainly people like me, who have a voice, should show themselves,” continued the 26-year-old attacker of Olympique Lyon. “I have been experiencing racism since I was little and I still experience it. Things often get snowed under, but we are not going to accept it anymore.”
Following the demonstration on Dam Square on Monday, an anti-racism protest took place on Wednesday at the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam. The municipality had to end the protest half an hour before the end because of the large turnout, which made it impossible to keep 1.5 meters away.
