Memorial Held for Bronx Man Who Died After Officer Threw Cooler

NEW YORK — On Saturday, members of the Bronx community gathered for a memorial service to honor Eric Duprey, a man who tragically lost his life after an NYPD officer threw a cooler at him.

Family and friends of Duprey were joined by members of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York to remember him and demand justice for his untimely death.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when undercover officers were conducting a drug bust and Duprey attempted to flee on a motorcycle. According to police reports, Sgt. Erik Duran threw a cooler at Duprey, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle and crash.

Duprey, 30, succumbed to blunt force injuries to his head as a result of the crash.

The community is outraged by the incident and is calling for an end to police brutality. Many attendees at the memorial expressed their frustration with the NYPD and demanded a change in their policies.

“We need to put an end to police brutality. The NYPD needs to have a real policy, and more so morally,” said one woman at the memorial.

“He had no reason to take a cooler and throw it and kill one of our people,” added a man in attendance.

Sgt. Erik Duran has been suspended pending further investigation. The office of Attorney General Letitia James is currently looking into the incident.
