Members of Brazil’s security services are complicit in last weekend’s storming of government buildings in Brasilia. So says Brazilian President Lula, who announced that he would remove all fanatical supporters of his predecessor Bolsonaro from the security services.

“There are many accomplices within the military police, within the armed forces,” said Lula. “I am convinced that the door of the palace was opened to let the protesters in because I did not see any damage to the door.”

On Sunday, thousands of radicals thronged bolsonarista’s the parliament, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in the capital and caused great destruction there. They expressed their dissatisfaction with the swearing in of Lula as president. Eventually, the crowd was dispersed with tear gas by riot police.

A day later the question arose how it could have happened and why the military police hadn’t acted harder. Images show that law enforcement officers did little to stop the demonstrators. Some chatted or had their picture taken with demonstrators.

It will be a difficult task to identify the fanatical Bolsonaro supporters among members of the security services, Lula officials said. But an investigation is already underway into what exactly happened that day, to find out who allowed the storming.

Shortly after the storm, the governor of the federal district, an ally of Bolsonaro, was already suspended. The district’s top security chief, who served as justice minister under Bolsonaro, was also fired immediately. Hundreds of protesters were arrested.
