Meghan Markle has reportedly decided to abandon her application for British nationality.
The 38-year-old actress – who has been married to Prince Harry since 2018 – originally decided to become a British citizen after joining the royal family, but she would now have given up on that goal because she would be hard pressed to get it now that she and Harry have decided to live outside the country more than 90 days a year.
Under English law, the Duchess cannot have left the country more than 270 days during the three years preceding the request.
Westkin Associates immigration lawyer Michael Marziano told the Sun on Sunday: “An American citizen must live in the United Kingdom with his British partner when the visa extension application is made. They must continue to live in the UK permanently. “
Prince Harry had recently given a very moving speech regarding their departure from the royal family as senior members.
At a charity dinner, he said, “I want you to hear the truth from me, at least what I can share – not as Prince or Duke, but as Harry, the same No one you’ve watched growing up in the past 35 years. The UK is my home and a place I love. It will never change. I grew up feeling your support, and I saw you welcoming Meghan with open arms. as you saw me find the love and happiness I had been waiting for all my life. (…) You have known me well enough over all these years to know that the woman I have chosen as my wife defends the same values as I. And she’s still the woman I fell in love with.
