Medio Rural Launches Free Bluetongue Vaccination Campaign for Cattle and Sheep in Galicia

On January 2, Medio Rural will launch a new free bluetongue vaccination campaign for cattle and sheep throughout Galicia. The campaign will start on farms in restricted areas of this disease, declared in the month of November. A month later, the 2024 campaign will also begin in the restricted zone in February 2023, which was already vaccinated this year.

In this way, the first areas that will receive the vaccine correspond to the province of A Coruña and the veterinary regions of A Mariña Central, A Mariña Oriental, A Mariña Occidental, Terra Chá Guitiriz, Terra Chá Castro, Terra Chá Vilalba, Meira, Lugo , A Ulloa, Os Ancares and A Fonsagrada, in the province of Lugo. The campaign will begin in Santa Comba and Mazaricos, in A Coruña; and in A Pastoriza, Portomarín and Barreiros, in Lugo.

In the second phase, the animals will be revaccinated from the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra, and from the Sarria, Chantada and Terra de Lemos-Quiroga regions, in Lugo. In this case, in addition to revaccination of the animals, animals that have not been vaccinated will also be vaccinated for the first time, due to having been born after the visits made by the vaccination staff or due to being incorporated from the free zone.

The Xunta recalls the importance of carrying out vaccination, either through the public service, or by going to the services of free veterinary personnel or the Livestock Health Defense Groups (ADSG), before the vector season begins. The purpose is to have the animals protected and prevent the spread of the disease, on the one hand, and that the farms are not affected in the movements of their animals, on the other.

The Department indicates that livestock farmers who wish to do so can use the services of free veterinary personnel or the ADSG, both to vaccinate the entire farm and to do so later with the animals born after vaccination in saba. In this case, it is necessary to point out that the Xunta authorized all veterinary personnel who requested it to carry out said vaccination and that Medio Rural will provide the vaccine to these personnel free of charge.
