Media: Jura: course project in the face of “fake news” – Switzerland

Teach Jura students to inform themselves so as not to be manipulated by “fake news” (false news). This is the subject of a motion by the Independent Christian Social Party (PCSI) which considers it urgent to arm the youth with more critical spirit in order to avoid shortcuts of reasoning and other common pitfalls.

PCSI deputy Quentin Haas calls on the government to introduce “intellectual self-defense” and awareness-raising courses on disinformation, source control and other media traps linked to information, in particular on social networks. These courses would be aimed at pupils of compulsory school age.

With digitalization, the traditional media find themselves drowned in a flow of information where it is always more complex to discern the true from the false, notes the member in his motion. The elected official notes that “the new online competition and the speed of circulation of content” blurs the boundaries between information and disinformation.

“So much so that it is not uncommon for partial or false content to compete in sometimes impressive proportions with information demonstrating rigor and caution,” writes the deputy. False information and rumors circulate online sometimes up to ten times faster on average than verified information, he said on the basis of studies. (Ps / nxp)
