Mayors in Security Council: everyone must adhere to corona rules

In recent days, a number of mayors have announced that they will turn a blind eye to the opening of shops and catering on Saturday, because it is a demonstration against the strict lockdown. The entrepreneurs must then act safely and responsibly.

Fine handed out

The Security Council believes that the rules apply to everyone. “Although of course we cannot assess the local situation in Aalten or Leeuwarden, for example,” says Bruls. The council recommends warning entrepreneurs who open their business. If that really doesn’t help, a fine can be handed out. In extreme cases, a case can be forced to close. According to Bruls, the cabinet and the Public Prosecution Service endorse this line of conduct.

He did point out that ‘everyone should keep their feet on the floor’. “We don’t suddenly go out like crazy with the coupon books. We never did that, and we won’t do that now.”

Slipped Yeşilgöz

Justice Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz emphasized ‘the importance of compliance, control and enforcement’ of the corona rules during the Security Council. That came after she previously said that compliance is “more what you and I make of it than the police have to walk around.” According to the minister, compliance with the rules was also ‘up to the people themselves’.

This led to strong criticism of the new justice minister. That is why she emphasized compliance with the rules at the Security Council tonight.

Provide perspective

Tonight, the Security Council did assess the very serious concerns that there are about how society is doing. The mayors have urged Justice Minister Yesilgöz that the cabinet will provide a glimpse into short-term relaxation tomorrow.

“We hope that the cabinet will explain what is possible in the next four weeks and when, if it is not yet possible on Friday. Because relaxation should really, really come,” says Bruls. “Also give perspective. What is not possible tomorrow may be possible in a week.”
