Mayor of Karbala Iraq Killed by Shots, 3 Bullets in Chest

KARBALA – Mayor of Karbala Abeer Salim Al-Khafaji in the southwest of the capital Iraq , Baghdad, died after being shot by gunmen on Tuesday (10/8).

Three bullets lodged in his chest which claimed his life at the site of the attack.

“Al-Khafaji was killed by gunmen while overseeing the city’s campaign accompanied by security forces to stop the violations that took place in the Al-Mamlji area,” the Iraqi News Agency reported.

Earlier, a security source said Al-Khafaji was shot along with two city government employees by people who opposed removing the offences.

According to the security source, the shooting took place on Al-Hur Street near Al-Safwa College in the residential neighborhood of Al-Zahraa.

Iraq continues to experience bloody violence. Since the popular uprising in Iraq in October 2019, more than 70 activists have been targeted by assassination attempts, while dozens of others have been kidnapped.
