Mayor of Hungarian capital Karachon resigns from opposition elections – Abroad – News

Prior to the first round of opposition party elections last week, the 46-year-old Karachon was considered a favorite, but remained in second place among the three candidates.

Karachon announced today that in the second round of elections, which will begin on Sunday and last until October 16, he will support the conservative candidate Peter Mark-Zoya.

In the first round, the most votes – 35% – were won by Klara Dobreva, a 49-year-old lawyer and Vice-President of the European Parliament (EP). Karachon got 27% of the vote and Marki-Zoy got 20%.

Marki-Zoy, 49, a practicing Catholic and father of seven, has positioned himself as the only candidate who can attract both left-wing voters and conservatives who are tired of Orban.

The Hungarian opposition, which has been divided for years, now has a common goal: to overthrow Orban in next year’s parliamentary elections.

The Alliance brings together six different opposition parties, including the left, the Liberal and the former far right.

The opposition accuses 58-year-old Orban of endemic corruption and predisposes to authoritarianism. The opposition hopes that the new pre-election system will pave the way for the defeat of Orban’s party, Fidesz.

“The opposition can compete with Fidesz only if it is in a united bloc, we have learned it in a difficult way,” said Antals Ksardi, a Green Party (LMP) candidate before the first round of elections.

The winner gets the whole system that Orbans introduced in the elections in 2012 helped Fidesz gain an overwhelming majority in parliament in both 2014 and 2018, despite the fact that the party won less than 50% of the vote.

The pre-election will allow opposition supporters to nominate one candidate to oppose Orban and joint candidates to compete with Fidesz politicians in 106 constituencies.
