By participating with the French “adapted sport” judo team in the Virtus Global Games 2023, which took place for the first time in France from June 4 to 10, 2023, in Vichy, Maxime Guhur, member of the Judo Club du Neubourg since 2016 , realized his dream. But it broke in the third and final fight, when the Neubourgeois suffered a triple fracture of his left leg.

“It’s their Olympics”

This world competition, intended for athletes with a mental handicap, brought together more than 1,000 athletes from around forty nations, ready to compete in 13 different disciplines. Judo participated for the first time. Maxime Guhur, 25, four-time French champion (2015, 2017, 2018, 2023) and bronze medalist at the European Championship (2018), had won his place in the French adapted sport team.

The only representative of the department of Eure, he fought in the under 100 kg, in the autistic category with intellectual disability. “These Global Games take place every four years, it’s their Olympic Games, because the mentally handicapped are very little represented at the Paralympic Games”, confides his coach from the Judo Club of Neubourg, Olivier Cornu.

The drama

The only Frenchman in the under 100 kg, Maxime Guhur had three four-minute fights to do in the pool. “Like at the Olympics, you only have one representative per category,” explains Olivier Cornu. After a victory in the first fight and a draw in the second, things were pretty good for the Neubourgeois. A new success in the third, and gold held out its arms to him.

But after about thirty seconds of confrontation, it was the tragedy: “On an attack from Maxime, his opponent, to avoid the fall, wraps his leg by passing his foot behind. What is prohibited. Max then loses his balance, and while falling, his leg gives way. Double fracture of the tibia and one of the fibula, ”relives Olivier Cornu, who was present at the edge of the tatami to encourage his foal.

Nail and medal

After waiting for help for long minutes, lying on the tatami, in extreme pain, Maxime was transported to Vichy hospital where he was operated on the same evening.

They nailed him with screws the whole length of his shin

And after three days of hospitalization, Maxime returned from Vichy to Le Neubourg by ambulance. But in the meantime, the day after the fight, the national trainer and Olivier Cornu came to give him the silver medal on his hospital bed. A medal with a bitter taste, but so comforting for the champion: “Despite my serious injury, this silver medal, the first in the world, is a great reward for me. She comes to validate all my work and the many hours of training done at the Neubourg dojo with Olivier. »

Two goals

As a true fighter, Maxime does not want to feel sorry for himself, but on the contrary look forward.

I’m motivated, I’m going to do everything to get back on the tatami as quickly as possible. Judo is my favorite sport, I am passionate about it.

After three months with a boot and crutches, then a period of rehabilitation, Maxime should resume, if all goes well, judo in six months, a little before Christmas. His teacher Olivier Cornu has already set a goal for him: “He will prepare for the 2024 French adapted sport championships, with his sights set on a fifth title. In addition, next year, they take place in Montauban, we will go to see a rugby match. »

Another objective for Maxime, obtaining the black belt. Just before leaving for Vichy, he had obtained his kata, the technical part. “He must now total 100 points on the combat part. He has 50 left to score, ”says Olivier.

Enough to boost Maxime Guhur to return to the tatami as quickly as possible. “I also hope to be selected to be a volunteer at the Paris 2024 Olympics. I have already been once at the Kindarena in Rouen, and twice at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2021 and 2022.” Passion, when you hold us.
