Queen Máxima visited the department of Medical Microbiology of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) on Wednesday afternoon. According to the National Information Service, the working visit was part of scientific research into the corona virus.

The LUMC is researching both vaccines and antiviral medicines to combat the spread of the coronavirus. For example, researchers from the Department of Medical Microbiology are testing in the laboratory whether potential vaccines generate protective immunity against the virus.

In the hospital, the Queen spoke to staff from the Department of Medical Microbiology. She was explained by virologists and analysts about their work in the lab in developing and testing vaccines and antivirals. In addition, in a demonstration using an electron microscope, Máxima was able to see what damage the virus causes in infected cells.
