Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen believes the absence of tire wars in F1 has prompted Pirelli to take a much more conservative approach to tire development, especially wet-weather tyres.

Exclusivity has allowed Pirelli to develop products tailored to F1’s specific needs, from a technical or entertainment perspective, using degrading compounds that emphasize the strategic elements of racing.
Over the years, however, there has been a fair amount of criticism directed at Pirelli regarding durability and grip levels, not only by Max Verstappen but also by Lewis Hamilton and other drivers.
“Naturally when there is a tire war people will go to extremes and really push everything they have in terms of resources,” Verstappen told Viaplay.
“When you’re not in a tire war, just take it easy. It’s still going to cost a lot of money. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t need to find another 0.2-3 seconds.”
Last year, Max Verstappen also took aim at Pirelli’s wet-weather tires. After last October’s rain-soaked Japanese Grand Prix, race-winning Max Verstappen said his tires “can’t drain a lot of water” in extreme conditions.
Two-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has offered to help Pirelli improve its wet-weather tyres.
“I’m sure it’s possible, but I think we need to discuss it more with them,” said Verstappen.
