Max Verstappen ends Mercedes hegemony at 70th anniversary GP at Silverstone

Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull-Honda) won the Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary of the founding of Formula 1 on Sunday at the Silverstone circuit in England. At the wheel of his Red Bull-Honda and starting from 4th place, he managed to win this 5th Grand Prix of the season ahead of the Mercedes, unbeaten in 2020 and big favorites, thanks to a tire strategy different from his opponents. Having started on hard tires, telling the mediums for the others, he made his first tire change much later and was able to take the lead. Starting again after the second change, he preceded by 11.326 seconds under the checkered flag at the end of the 52 laps the Briton Lewis Hamilton, winner the previous week of the British Grand Prix on this same circuit despite a puncture in the last turn just in front of Verstappen. Finland’s Valtteri Bottas, who started from pole, completed the podium at 19.321 seconds.

At 22, Verstappen won his 9th success, the first since Brazil in 2019, and climbed to his 35th career podium. He is now 2nd in the championship with 77 points behind the 107 points of the six-time world champion and three-time defending champion (2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) who remained on three consecutive successes: in Styria, Hungary and Great- Brittany. Bottas is 3rd with 73 units. Hamilton, who clocked the fastest lap in the race and fielded a 38th Grand Prix in points, climbed to the 155th podium of his career and equaled Michael Schumacher’s record.

The 6th round of the championship will take place next Sunday, August 16, during the Spanish Grand Prix at the Montmelo circuit, north of Barcelona.
