NEW DELHI: The central government’s notification of rules for the implementation of the controversial Citizenship Act (CAA) has sparked protests across the country. Protesters burn CAA copies as they call for hartal in Assam People came out in protest in Uttar Pradesh too. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that strict action will be taken against the protesters.

Actor Vijay also came forward with the stand that CAA cannot be accepted in Tamil Nadu. Vijay demanded that the Center is trying to create division where there is sectarianism and that the CAA will not be implemented in the state. This is Vijay’s first political response after forming a political party called Tamilaka Vetri Kazhakam.
With just days left to announce the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections, the central government has notified the rules for implementation of the controversial provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The rules are for granting Indian citizenship to people belonging to 6 religions except Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. In 2019, Parliament passed amendments to the Citizenship Act to grant citizenship on the basis of religion. It came into force on December 12, 2019 after notification with the assent of the President. However, provisions were not made. Citizenship is given to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis who arrived in India as refugees before December 31, 2014.
