More than 20 horses, probably more than two dozen, lost their lives in a racetrack fire in upstate New York. Authorities are investigating the incident, which may have been provoked.
The animals died early Thursday morning in the barn of the Tiago Downs Casino Resort. According to police, a 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Pennsylvania, is charged with arson, robbery and other charges.
The resort is located in Nichols, a city located near New York’s border with Pennsylvania, approximately 150 miles northwest of the Big Apple.
One person suffered severe burns while trying to save the horses
The police investigation revealed that the suspect entered the barn and intentionally set the fire, causing damage amounting to more than $120,000.
Another person, who entered the barn to try to save the horses, had to be taken to a hospital for suffering second-degree burns, police confirmed to the AP.
Through its social networks, the Tioga Downs Casino Resort issued a statement stating: “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy, it was a loss that no one could have imagined or expected.”
