Mass vaccination against COVID-19 begins in northern Macedonia

With the vaccination of 20,000 citizens over the age of 77 with chronic diseases, a mass vaccination process against the coronavirus in the Republic of Northern Macedonia begins today, Nezavisen Vesnik reported, quoted by BTA.

Citizens will be immunized with the AstraZeneca vaccine, 24,000 doses of which arrived on March 28th at Skopje airport through the Kovax mechanism. Health Minister Venko Filipche announced last night that the country would follow the example of Canada and Germany and would not vaccinate people under the age of 60 with AstraZeneca.

Another 76,000 doses of the vaccine are expected to arrive, through the same mechanism that will be provided for revaccination. Larger quantities of vaccines are also expected from China and Russia, Skopje media reported.

Nova Makedonija newspaper reported that 33 died and 1,272 were newly infected with COVID-19 in the last 24 hours in the country, according to the health ministry. In the last 24 hours, a total of 3948 coronavirus tests were performed and 868 recovered patients were registered. The number of active cases in the country currently amounts to 18,370.
