Martinique faces a double epidemiological problem that worries the health authorities. 60 new cases of Covid-19 in just 7 days, 1,580 cases of dengue in 1 month, the territory fears an outbreak of epidemics, containment is being considered.
The situation became more complicated in Martinique as the territory began to set up operations to revive the economy, in particular with theoperation “go to music in Martinique”. Cases of dengue fever continue to rise to worrying levels, circulation of the virus is considered “ very active By the health authorities, with a contamination rate at the highest level, largely exceeding the threshold of November 2019.
The Covid-19 meanwhile is in full resurgence, there are multiple outbreaks, the cases detected are increasing sharply, practically at the same level as before the confinement in March.
The concern of Dengue
The Santé Publique France establishment, in its latest regional bulletin analyzing virus data until August 2, 2020, confirms a worrying increase in clinical cases of Dengue in Martinique. In its weekly press release, the organization reports 8,380 cases recorded since February 2020, mainly recorded in the Center and North of the island:
« The dengue epidemiological surveillance indicators indicate the continuation of the epidemic in Martinique. The spatial distribution of biologically confirmed cases shows a very active viral circulation throughout the territory and particularly within the municipalities of the Center and North of the island. The South nevertheless remains affected by the epidemic, in particular the municipality of Diamant ».
Six serious cases and two deaths to be deplored, while during the week of July 27 to August 2, the number of cases observed is among the highest since the first exceedances of the tolerance threshold recorded in November 2019.
The concern of Covid-19
About sixty cases in just 7 days, a return close to the level of the pre-containment in March 2020. Three sources of contamination have been confirmed, and many others are suspected. The Regional Health Agency is in the process of identifying the various potential clusters and the results are eagerly awaited by the authorities. If the first cluster identified a few days ago allowed an initial follow-up of cases, the contamination has done its work and the multiplication of outbreaks could be a result.
The various cultural and sporting events planned in Martinique have not yet been canceled, but the situation could quickly change. For specialists, the situation in Martinique could be at a turning point, the circulation of the virus on the territory is confirmed. The health authorities remind more than ever to respect the barrier gestures, and the possibility of a new confinement has been mentioned.
