The Martigues basketball players were enormous this evening to bring down the leader ASVEL Villeurbanne. The Martégales won 80/78 after extra time, making their supporters capsize with happiness.
They went through all the emotions this evening. The determination to shake up, as has rarely been this season, the leader of Nationale 1… The relief when Claire Lainé gave her team two points in advance three seconds from the end…. The frustration when ASVEL equalized at the buzzer… Then the explosion of joy at the final whistle with this huge 80/78 victory after extra time.
“Ha, how tight we are, at the bottom of this box… The sardines sing, the sardines sing”. This tune was played several times by the fanfare to push the “sardines” of Martigues against Villeurbanne. “Sardines” which were not at all cramped this evening in a once again full Chave gymnasium.
The Martégales basketball players really delighted their audience. They started the match in maestro mode (42/27, 20th) then tried to resist with a lot of heart and courage when the visitors returned (57/45, 30th). The end of the match was particularly intense (61/57, 37th), with ASVEL taking the lead one minute from the end (64/65, 39th). The Provençales regained the advantage immediately and, 3 seconds from the end, Claire Laine thought to give victory with a free throw (67/65). But to everyone’s surprise, the Lyonnaises equalized at the buzzer, taking both teams into overtime. The Martégales did not let themselves be defeated however and snatched a prestigious victory 80/78. A 4th consecutive success which almost ensures their maintenance in N1.
The MSB will continue with a new home match on the 23rd against Colomiers, then end the season with a trip to Roanne on April 6 before hosting Geispolsheim on April 13.
