The phenomenon of a tornado on the planet Mars was recorded on video camera. Scientists suspect that the tornado was giant in size with a height of around 2 kilometers.
Quoted from detikINET, the tornado on Mars was captured on video by Navcams on August 30. Navcams are space navigation cameras on Perseverance, a robotic Mars rover with a mission to search for signs of ancient life on Mars and collect samples to be delivered to Earth.
Scientists estimate that the tornado appeared at a location called Thorofare Ridge, about 4 kilometers from where Perseverance is located, with an area of 60 meters and a height of 2 kilometers.
“We didn’t see the top of the tornado, but the shadow it cast gives us a good indication of its height,” explained planetary scientist at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Mark Lemmon, as reported detikINET from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory press release, Tuesday (3/10/2023).
Previously, in 2012, a tornado was also caught on Mars with a height of up to 20 km.
For your information, tornadoes usually form when the ground is heated by the Sun, which causes the air to rise. This rising air then creates low pressure in the atmosphere. The air rushes to fill the low pressure so that a tornado forms.
