Markéta Vondroušová’s return after the quarterfinals of the US Open did not go well at all. In Beijing, she was eliminated in the first round, and she also caught it on social networks from angry bettors, just like another Czech tennis player, Linda Nosková, did last week.
It looked like a clear match, the tennis player from Sokolov won the first set over the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinin with a commanding 6:1 on Sunday, but she lost the next two sets and was eliminated from the WTA 1000 tournament in the first round.
One of the biggest surprises of the first day caused wild reactions on social networks, and Vondroušová had to read a series of hateful messages about herself, in which anonymous accounts call her, for example, a “fraudster” or a “shit”.

“And here it is again,” Vondroušová wrote on the screenshots on which she published a list of insults from angry punters. The Czech tennis player obviously messed up their ticket.
She has already encountered something similar in the past, but since the summer when she triumphed at Wimbledon and successfully made it to the second week of the New York Grand Slam, she has had peace from internet trolls.
Last week, Linda Nosk also posted the same pictures after she was knocked out in the round of 16 at the Tokyo tournament. On them, users even wished her cancer and death.
The internet attack on the Czechs sparked a debate among foreign tennis journalists as well, whether female tennis players deserve some protection in this regard.
“It’s easy to tell female players to ‘ignore it’, but honestly, it’s hard not to notice. Online bullying is a big problem,” Italian journalist Mario Boccardi, for example, wrote on Twitter.
In any case, Vondroušová dramatized the fight for the elite eight for the Tournament of Champions with an early end. So far, the tennis player from Sokol is ranked sixth in the WTA Race ranking, which determines the qualification for the final event in Cancun. It is on the program at the turn of October and November.
