Mark Wright ‘ruined his football career’ with a summer partying in Spain

Mark Wright has confessed that he “lives with regret” for ruining his own professional soccer career.

The 34-year-old reality TV star-turned-radio DJ has been busy coming back, after decides to give football another chance and join Crawley Town FC’s Ligue 2 team

He made his club debut against Leeds United, having previously hung up his boots at just 20 years old.

Thinking back to his early days as a footballer, Mark admits he is to blame for his steadfast career in the sport, as he ruined his chances by spending a summer partying abroad.

To talk to Radio times, Mark confessed that he lost his fitness during a holiday in Spain which eventually saw him leave Tottenham Hotspur, where he had been captain of the youth team.

Mark explained: “I ruined my own career and being released by Tottenham is a trauma that stuck with me.

“I’ve been regretful for the past 15 years, but it also made me realize that I can’t afford to do this again.

While Mark may have gotten his start in soccer, he is best known by fans for appearing on reality shows, the star who made his Towie debut when it first aired in 2010 and continues to appear on popular shows I Am a Celebrity and strictly come dance.

Addressing the stigma associated with reality TV, Mark insisted that it is not easy to open up your life so publicly and pursue your career.

“Starting out on a reality show comes with a stigma. As soon as someone does one, they apparently have no talent, ”he said.

“But please differ. It’s not easy to put a camera to your face and expect it to be entertaining or enjoyable.

Since his Towie days, Mark has become a radio host on Heart FM, hosting the station’s show on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons.

He also turned to fitness and launched his own fitness app and site, Train Wright, along with his brother Josh Wright, who is also a footballer and plays for Crawley Town.

His business saw Mark land his own gym-inspired series on BBC Two called Workout the Wright Way, which will air on weekday mornings, as well as his own miniseries on BBC iPlayer after his return to football.

Workout the Wright Way premieres Monday January 25 on BBC2, while Mark Wright: The Last Chance is available on BBC iPlayer.
