Mark Cavendish (Bahrain-McLaren) gave a striking interview after Ghent-Wevelgem. The British sprinter went along in the long breakaway, but in front of the cameras he stammered only one sentence afterwards. “This may be the last game of my career,” he said, with tears in his eyes.

After the sentence, he immediately pulled further, so that further reaction to the statement of the 35-year-old former winner was lacking. Cavendish is ex-world champion, won Milan Sanremo, thirty stages in the Tour and won his last race in the Dubai Tour in February 2018. Cavendish is still looking for a new employer for next season, but the Brit seems very hopeful there so not to have.
