Stuttgart will return to the elite of the Bundesliga, despite their clear defeat at home (3-1) against Darmstadt on the 34th and last day of the German second division league, this Sunday, after which their player Mario Gomez announced his withdrawal.

With five German championship titles, Stuttgart finished second in the standings (58 points) and will accompany the elite to Bielefeld (68 points), who had already been assured for two weeks of his return to the first division, which he had abandoned in 2009.

The former German international of Spanish origins Mario Gómez, 34, scored the only goal for Stuttgart against Darmstadt. The former Bayern Munich and Fiorentina striker announced his retirement after the game.

“It was my last mission for VfB,” he declared. “I have always dreamed of ending my career here,” he said.

In 78 games with the German national team, Mario Gómez finished second in Euro-2008 and third in World Cup-2010. He was not part of the group that was world champion in Brazil in 2014.

For its part, the Heidenheim, club from the Stuttgart region, surprisingly took third place (55 points), which will allow them to play a playoff for promotion against 16th in the first, Werder Bremen.

On this last day of second, Heidenheim, who played in the fifth category in 2008, fell 3-0 to Bielefeld, but Hamburg did not take advantage by falling 5-1 at home to Sandhausen.

Hamburg (4th, 54 points) had not left the Bundesliga since the creation of the German championship in 1963, until its relegation in 2018.

In the academic year 2020-2021, Hamburg will therefore continue in the second division.
