At 6:31 p.m., the SVP dropped the bomb: the SVP’s finding committee proposed Marco Chiesa (45), the Ticino Council of States, as the new party president. Chiesa has not been the focus of speculation so far about who could succeed Albert Rösti. According to a communication from the commission, the father of two was “one of the preferred candidates from the start”.
–
Chiesa had – like all the other preferred candidates for the party – actually canceled. For professional reasons, it was said at the time. Chiesa was the director of an old age center. Now he has quit the job, with which he is able to take over the party presidency, the SVP announces.
–
Chiesa has done some work for the SVP in Ticino, the finding commission justifies her choice. Chiesa was a member of the National Council from 2015 to 2019 and has been a member of the Council of States since October. He is also one of three vice presidents of the national party. The Ticino is married, has two children (10 and 12) and lives with his family in Lugano.

Glarner withdraws
With their decision, the Finding Commission stuns Alfred Heer and Andreas Glarner. They were the only ones who had officially run. However, the SVP had always been looking for a better candidate behind the scenes. Heer did not approve of the commission because he dares to contradict SVP doyen Christoph Blocher; Glarner because he keeps provoking excitement that goes too far even for many in the party.
–
Glarner is now withdrawing his candidacy, as he says when asked by BLICK. “I think that’s a very good solution,” he says. «I feared the worst. A lot of names were mentioned. Not all of them would have been qualified. »

But Chiesa is “a very good candidate: trilingual, with management qualities, networked in all parts of the country”. However: Chiesa doesn’t speak German very well yet.
