The rescue operation after the eruption of the Marapi volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has ended. Rescue workers found the body of a missing climber on Wednesday. The remaining climbers were safely removed from the mountain.

With the discovery of the body, the death toll from the volcanic eruption has risen to 23. The body of the last missing woman was removed from the mountain on Wednesday.

The rescuers already assumed that the woman had not survived. On Tuesday, rescuers had already removed the bodies of the other victims from the mountain.

The Marapi erupted on Sunday. The volcano spewed an ash cloud 3 kilometers high, which fell around the mountain. Rescuers were hampered by seven smaller eruptions after the eruption.

Most powerful eruption since 1979

At the time of the eruption there were 75 climbers in the area. Many of the rescued climbers are injured and have burns. Climbers became covered in a thick layer of ash and had difficulty breathing.

The eruption of the 2,861 meter high Marapi was the most powerful since 1979, when sixty people were killed. The previous eruption was in February this year.

Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire, an area known for many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Marapi is one of the most active of the more than a hundred active volcanoes in Indonesia.
